Crowned Chameleon: Thang Nguyen

What on Earth is a Crowned Chameleon?

Alterian Crowned Chameleon

At Alterian, we’ve taken to calling ourselves Chameleons, just like our platform. Since we’re Adaptive Marketers™ ourselves, themoniker seemed to fit just right. While our team consistently goes above and beyond across the board, each month we’ll highlight one employee who has been nominated by our team leads for that little extra something in embodying our mission, vision, values, and goals—the Crowned Chameleon.

Thang Nguyen, Solutions Architect

So, why Thang? Here are a few things the nominators had to say:

“Thang consistently demonstrates how an Alterian employee could look for that extra 2% in everything he does. Thang looks at problems from all angles; he challenges every situation to make sure he understands how best to solve it. Not only does he come up with ingenious solutions, but as he learns about our software and its behavior out in the real world, he brings this knowledge back and willingly shares it with our teams and partners; this means that those who learn from Thang also become 2% better and it has a cascading effect.”

“Thang is continually going the extra mile on customer projects to get work done correctly and on time. He always works hard to provide technical input for the support team when they have tricky issues, helping them at any time of the day and constantly putting in extra hours without a second thought. He’s also developed numerous ways of working smarter, performing system health checks, professional services documentation improvements—the list goes on.”

If you don’t know Thang, then you don’t know how strange it is to see him in a suit.

The Proverbial Interview

Dang, Thang! That’s some high praise, and it sounds well deserved.

At Alterian, we’re a great, big, international family, and we’d like to share some of that with you. So, I prompted Thang to share a bit about his professional and personal life to shed light on the type of rockstars that our team is made up of.

So, what do you do for Alterian?
“I work with a great professional services team in helping our clients be rock stars. As part of the advance party, I’ll to come in and talk you through what data you have and how we can mold it for Campaign Manager. I work my magic so that you get the solution you want.”

What is your favorite part about working for Alterian?
“I love the variety of the role; working with clients in different continents gives me a unique view of what’s going in the world of marketing. I can bring all this back and help the product to always move forward.”

What does being an Adaptive Marketer™ mean to you?
“Taking small steps forward to being free. My work philosophy is “work hard to be lazy.” What I mean by this is automate, automate, automate! With the day-to-day activities taken care of, it’ll free you up to work on the real issues facing your business.”

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done?
“Back in 2006, my wife (girlfriend at the time) and I did a tour of Borneo. We slept in the rain forest, saw pigmy elephants, and orangutans. We also walked part of the Sandakan route that the WWII POWs we’re forced to take. We walked up Mount Kinabalu and I proposed to her at the summit just as the sun was rising. Then, we ended the trip with a couple of days in tree house next to the beach.”

See? Now this picture looks much more like Thang than the one in the suit.
A sunrise summit proposal? What a romantic guy. Spoiler alert: She said yes!

Tell us something unique about yourself.
“This my go-to interesting fact. I was born in Vietnam on the losing side of the war. Due to my father’s involvement in the South Vietnamese army, we had to leave and he planned our escape in 1980. We left in a boat with 30 others in the dead of night navigating through the naval patrols. Luckily, rescue came quickly and we were picked up an British Merchant ship and taken to Australia.”

Thang, his family, and the other refugees captured the moment of their rescue.
On June 19, 1980, a British merchant ship spotted them out at sea.

Who’s next?

I’d like to extend my thanks to Thang for giving us so much to showcase about him here. As yet another testament to his dedication and attentiveness, he sat down to chat with me and sent me all of this within just two hours of me asking. Talk about turnaround!

Thang is one of many unique and talented cogs in the Alterian machine, and I look forward to sharing next month’s Crowned Chameleon with you in August.

Niki Hale, Marketing Communications & Campaigns Manager

Niki is a marketing jack-of-all-trades for Alterian—you might say, a true Chameleon! Since graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder, she has worked in marketing for ad tech, martech, and the agency space, gaining unique perspective for B2C, B2B, and internal communications. From web and graphic design, to social media management, copywriting, culture initiatives, and more, Niki helps us market to marketers.

At home, you can most likely find Niki cooking—with a glass of wine in hand, of course—or drawing, all while plugged in to an audiobook or a podcast. She’s also a die-hard Harry Potter fan and loves attending concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheater outside of Denver.
