What on Earth is a Crowned Chameleon?
At Alterian, we’ve taken to calling ourselves Chameleons, just like our platform. Since we’re Adaptive Marketers™ ourselves, the moniker seemed to fit just right. While our team consistently goes above and beyond across the board, each month we’ll highlight one employee who has been nominated by our team leads for that little extra something in embodying our mission, vision, values, and goals—the Crowned Chameleon.
Harley Thorne, Site Reliability Engineer
Congratulations, Harley! Here’s what the nominations had to say:
“If you need help, Harley is there. Period. He’s the type of person who you’ll never hear say, ‘Well, that’s not my job.’ By wearing multiple hats and working across all of our departments, Harley ensures that projects get done with his support wherever needed. Perhaps most importantly, he does it with an infectiously positive attitude. An incredibly hard worker, we’re lucky to have him!”
“Harley exemplifies the core principles of Alterian. He’s always happy to help with any IT related issues, often answering emails outside of office hours. His knowledge always results in fast resolutions.”
“Harley doesn’t say no to any request—he always goes above and beyond to help anyone out regardless of whether it is his remit or if he is going to get any recognition for doing so. He is able to do this due to his ability to quickly learn any new technology without needing any help in doing so. Helping people out often means that he has to stay late and put in extra hours which he never complains about.”
The Proverbial Interview
That’s some high praise! Harley’s adaptability, timeliness, and eagerness to help solve problems makes him an invaluable member of our team.
At Alterian, we’re a great, big, international family, and we’d like to share some of that with you. So, I prompted Harley to share a bit about his professional and personal life to shed light on the type of badasses that our team is made up of.
So, what do you do for Alterian?
“I started at Alterian as an apprentice in IT support nearly seven years ago as a geeky 18-year-old with no experience. In that time, I’ve had the enjoyment of changing my email signature at least once a year! I’ve worked in IT Support, IT Systems, Infrastructure, DevOps, and now I’ve recently been given an exciting opportunity as a Site Reliability Engineer.
As a Site Reliability Engineer, my role is based around DevOps principals. As we move our products to the cloud, we have an exciting opportunity to utilize cloud services in Alterian products, and one of my key goals is to ensure our products makes that transition successfully so that we can provide an even better offering to our customers, especially when it comes to stability. Another of my main goals is to design and implement tooling and automation to improve testing, monitoring, and the deployment pipeline. And of course, we aim to automate everything possible, through the use of infrastructure-as-code in particular.”
What is your favorite part about working for Alterian?
“We have a fantastic group of people at Alterian, and working with my colleagues is a genuine pleasure. We are lucky to have some incredibly passionate people that really care about the company, and work incredibly hard so we can move forward together. As I joined the company at such a young age as an apprentice, there are so many people that helped me to progress into my current role by teaching me so many exciting things, and helped me gain experience across so many different areas.
I must give a shout-out to the football table too. I’ve had some incredibly dramatic games on that thing!”
What does being an Adaptive Marketer™ mean to you?
“Embracing new technology and jumping in at the deep end. If you look back just ten years, the martech landscape was so different. With real-time in particular, marketing becomes so much more powerful, and the sooner you can get onboard, the better! Adapting to the latest technology will always enable you to get ahead of the game, and your competitors.”
Do you have any unique talents / hobbies / facts about you?
“As an obsessive Bristol Rovers supporter (the oldest football club in Bristol, UK), I co-founded a supporters podcast called GasCast. We’ve had great feedback and have appeared on local TV and radio to talk about the club on several occasions. We average around 1,000 listens per episode, which we’re really happy with. We actually record the show in the Alterian Bristol office!
To be honest, the amount of time I spend following Bristol Rovers is pretty crazy. Making the trip to Carlisle away on a bank holiday stands out to me in particular. 275 miles each way. Over 10 hours in the car that day. And we lost 3-2. What a way to spend a day off!”
We believe in, “Work hard, play hard.” What’s your favorite thing to do outside of the office?
“I play football, I watch football, there’s really just a whole lot of football!
In terms of home life, I’ve got an amazing girlfriend and we live in Redfield, Bristol with our two cats, Lines and Aurora. People hate how much we talk about our cats, so I’ll just leave you with a picture.”
Thank you for having fun with this feature blog and telling us some unique things about yourself, Harley! Congratulations on this honor—you deserve it. Harley is one of many unique and talented cogs in the Alterian machine, and I look forward to sharing next month’s Crowned Chameleon with you next month.
