Crowned Chameleon: Mal Roberts

What on Earth is a Crowned Chameleon?

At Alterian, we’ve taken to calling ourselves Chameleons, just like our platform. Since we’re Adaptive Marketers™ ourselves, the moniker seemed to fit just right. While our team consistently goes above and beyond across the board, each month we’ll highlight one employee who has been nominated by our team leads for that little extra something in embodying our mission, vision, values, and goals—the Crowned Chameleon.

Alterian Crowned Chameleon

Mal Roberts, Product Manager

Congratulations, Mal! Here are a few things the nominators had to say:

“Mal has continued to step up his energy and involvement with clients. Going past the traditional comfort zone of going out and meeting with clients to a point where he is a vital part of many client meetings I have seen. His ‘lets make it happen’ attitude is infectious and one of his greatest qualities. If you have not seen him in action with a customer or prospect, I highly recommend it.”

“For getting up in the middle of the night to support key presentations and demonstrations and all the extra time he has committed to client success. We couldn’t do it without you!”

The Proverbial Interview

Nicely done, Mal! Your tenacity and energy when it comes to client success makes you stand out from the crowd.

At Alterian, we’re a great, big, international family, and we’d like to share some of that with you. So, I prompted Mal to share a bit about his professional and personal life to shed light on the type of badasses that our team is made up of.

So, what do you do for Alterian?
“I wear lots of hats. My official job title is Product Manager but I am involved with lots of parts of the business, from regular product management across all the products, product owning the Dynamic Decision Engine, to creating pre-sales demos and using new tech to solve business problems in strange and innovative ways.”

What is your favorite part about working for Alterian?
“The people first. Secondly, the wide variety of challenges… and thirdly the great coffee machine!”

What does being an Adaptive Marketer™ mean to you?
“An Adaptive Marketer is someone who puts their customers first, understands what they need and delivers it. They believe anything is possible and can look beyond the norms of conventional marketing to engage with their customers in cool and interesting ways. Most importantly, they keep a close eye on the value that their actions provide to both their customers and their businesses and strive to deliver more.”

We believe in, “Work hard, play hard.” What’s your favorite thing to do outside of the office?
“I have a 7-year-old son who keeps me very busy; I am woken up every morning at 6:30 am to the sound of him humming/singing Bon Jovi’s ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ while he brushes his teeth, and from then on we are full throttle into the day. Other than that, I am a keen photographer and I read a lot. I particularly like dystopian or apocalypse literature.”

Tell us your most embarrassing story.
“No way. It is not printable, there are no pictures, and it all happened before the internet was invented… so there’s no point looking!”

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
“I would be able to look at someone and know instantly what kind of superpower they would say they wanted when asked this question. Or even better, my superpower would be the ability to give someone else the ability know what super power other people would want when asked this question… or maybe just to fly.”

Do you have any unique hobbies?
“I volunteer with the local Cub pack, which is great fun and quite hectic trying to organize 30+ crazy 8-year-olds.”

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done?
“Outside of being a dad and husband, the coolest thing I have done recently is take part in the Round the Island Race, which is a well known sailing race here in the UK around the Isle of White. It was my first time on a yacht and the seas were big (force 7 gales). Amazingly, I didn’t get sea sick.”

Who’s next?

Thank you for having fun with this feature blog and telling us some unique things about yourself, Mal! Congratulations on this honor—you deserve it. Mal is one of many unique and talented cogs in the Alterian machine, and I look forward to sharing next month’s Crowned Chameleon with you in the new year.

From web and graphic design, to social media management, copywriting, culture initiatives, and more, Niki helps us market to marketers.
