What on Earth is a Crowned Chameleon?
At Alterian, we’ve taken to calling ourselves Chameleons, just like our platform. Since we’re Adaptive Marketers™ ourselves, the moniker seemed to fit just right. While our team consistently goes above and beyond across the board, each month we’ll highlight one employee who has been nominated by our team leads for that little extra something in embodying our mission, vision, values, and goals—the Crowned Chameleon.
Steve Palfreyman, Cloud Delivery Architect
Excellent work, Steve! Here are a few things the nominators had to say:
“Steve is always working extra hours, covering weekends, volunteering for extra projects. He’s highly responsive to addressing customer issues; even when he’s on holiday, if he spots an issue, he’ll jump right in to get the customer moving again. He is always pushing for improvements in all areas he sees.”
“Steve consistently goes the extra mile—takes on work that isn’t his responsibility, and works on issues when not on call. Always puts client/business first. Always thinking of ways to improve process and challenges status quo.”
“Steve is a true DevOps hero that our support and tech teams often find themselves relying on for expertise and help. Steve regularly demonstrates a work ethic that is aligned with his beliefs that DevOps owns the delivery and operations of our software. Steve offers his help and expertise whether or not it is his area of responsibility and never grumbles or groans as he wakes up at all sorts of unsociable hours to help resolve issues before they impact our customers (and sometimes when he isn’t even on call). Steve sees issues through to their final resolution—in fact, Steve shows such a sense of ownership and responsibility that my team often complain that he is taking work away from them. Steve also comes up with ingenious ideas on how to solve problems. I love being able to work with Steve and see his brain cogs work away as he comes up with solutions!”
The Proverbial Interview
Congratulations, Steve! Having a team player that is such a go-getter is invaluable to our success.
At Alterian, we’re a great, big, international family, and we’d like to share some of that with you. So, I prompted Steve to share a bit about his professional and personal life to shed light on the type of badasses that our team is made up of.
So, what do you do for Alterian?
“I started in the support team at Alterian before moving to professional services, then operations, and now I am in DevOps as Cloud Delivery Architect. I strive for two things in my work: To save people on call from being paged by making our hosted environment more stable, and to save people from repetitive tasks by automating everything.”
What is your favorite part about working for Alterian?
“I love learning. It’s great working with people who have the same passion to learn new ways of doing things and being around people who can teach and inspire me to better. Innovation is key in our fast-paced industry—and there are plenty of innovative people at Alterian that I get to work with every day.”
What does being an Adaptive Marketer™ mean to you?
“Never say it can’t be done, and more than that, never say that you can’t do it. We are all our own worst critic, but when we put our mind to something we can all surprise ourselves by what we can achieve.”
What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done?
“I was working in Pakistan when Benazir Bhutto returned from Dubai and all flights from our site to Karachi were cancelled. I managed to persuade a local who was driving to Karachi to give me a lift the 350km from the Bhit gas field where we were working. It was an incredible experience, driving through the desert, seeing rural Pakistan, and then the complete contrast of Karachi, which must be the city with the best drivers in the world—how they ignore red lights and avoid the oncoming traffic was a sight to behold! Hang gliding in Rio has to be up there as well.”
We believe in, “Work hard, play hard.” What’s your favorite thing to do outside of the office?
“My first flight abroad wasn’t until I was 21, so since then I have tried to make up for it by traveling and working all around the world. Now that I have kids, my free time is mostly spent having adventures with them… but I also make sure that I have time for my music. I play guitar at my church, so I have to keep up the practice for that!”
Thank you for having fun with this feature blog and telling us some unique things about yourself, Steve! Congratulations on this honor—you deserve it. Steve is one of many unique and talented cogs in the Alterian machine, and I look forward to sharing next month’s Crowned Chameleon with you in December.
